Installing a USB printer on a Windows 98,ME,2K or XP system

Summary:

There may be an instance where the installation of a printer connecting via the USB port fails to install properly.  

Symptoms:

EL or LW series printer fails to install while connected to a USB port.  An error message might be received that the device attached to the USB port is not connected,  not turned on or is unknown. 

Details:

As with any USB device, once connected to a USB port an install wizard should appear and install the appropriate drivers.  Depending on where during the installation the failure occurs the printer can be installed manually by invoking the Add Printer function located in the Control Panel section of the operating system, or the USB uninstall utility will need to be run in order to start the install over fresh.

Resolution:

1.   If after installing the printer and the Dymo software you get an error that the printer is not responding or connected

2.        Put the DLS cd into the cd rom drive.

3.        Go into you Printers Folder and see if the Dymo printer is listed.

a.        If it is Right Click on the printer and select Properties

Go to Details or Ports depending on your operating system

Verify the correct port is selected for the printer.

Hit Apply if you made a change and try printing again.

b.       If it is not listed Run the Add Printer Wizard and see if you are given a USB port as a choice for the port selection.

If it is continue with the installation using this port..

The installation wizard  should search for dymo.inf.

bullet

If the wizard cannot locate this file then it will prompt for a manual search.

Depending on the CD you have it will either be in the root section of the cd or in a sub folder called English

bullet

Once the file has been installed the printer should function properly on the USB port.

If the USB port is not an option then the USB uninstall procedure is required.

 

USB Uninstall Procedure

Turn off the LabelWriter

bullet

Place the Dymo CD in the computer

bullet

Go to Start\Run and select Browse

bullet

Navigate to the LabelWriter CD

bullet

Depending on the CD you have you will either have a:

USB other folder

bullet

Select 0922_Uninstall.exe

bullet

Run this file and then restart the computer

 Support Files

bullet

 Select LWRemove.exe

bullet

 Run this file and follow on screen instructions.

bullet

 Once either one of these are done and you are back to the desktop. Turn the printer back on.

The New Hardware Wizard should come up.

Follow the on screen instructions.

 

NOTE: ACCORDING TO DYMO, THERE IS A KNOWN PROBLEM  WITH THE USB CONNECTION.  DYMO IS WORKING WITH MICROSOFT TO FIND A SOLUTION.  IF YOU RUN INTO THIS ISSUE, HAVE YOUR CLIENT CONNECT USING THE SERIAL CABLE.
